Series Tarot Major Arcana Matching: Part 1
Tarot cards have long had a place in my life. There is something about them that has compelled me to this day. I occassionally do Tart card readings for myself and I only use the Major Arcana when I do so.
Since I appreciate Tarot cards so much, I’ve decided to align characters/concepts from the series to the Tarot Major Arcana that best exemplify them. The quoted meanings for each Major Arcana are taken from The Pictorial Key to the Tarot. These are the meanings that are used with my Rider-Waite Tarot card deck and what I recognize in each card.
This post is part 1 of the series and concerns the first six Major Arcana. Some were quite easy to match up, some required more thinking.
1 - The Magician: Spellbinder
Skill, diplomacy, address, subtlety; sickness, pain, loss, disaster, snares of enemies; self-confidence, will; the Querent, if male. Reversed: Physician, Magus, mental disease, disgrace, disquiet.
This one is so obvious because…Magician! Who is the most prominent magic user in the book? Spellbinder!
But, okay, looking beyond that: Spellbinder has experienced disaster, pain, and disgrace. She exudes self-confidence, skill, and will too. It just makes sense.
2 - The High Priestess: Rayacha Chajaran
Secrets, mystery, the future as yet unrevealed; the woman who interests the Querent, if male; the Querent herself, if female; silence, tenacity; mystery, wisdom, science. Reversed: Passion, moral or physical ardour, conceit, surface knowledge.
Another…obvious one. Rayacha is a priestess with secrets regarding the future. She has been silent regarding them, tenacious in her path, and generally wise. On the reversed side, she is definitely passionate as well. I wouldn't call her conceited, but beyond that it aligns well with her.
3 & 4 Empress & Emperor: Nefertiti Magayak & Ramulein
Empress and Emperor didn’t necessarily have to be tied together, but that’s how it turned out. It was very apt for Nefertiti Magayak and Ramulein to take these cards. They are politically powerful people in the Empire that kind of match each other. Opposites and yet the same. I can’t think of two other characters that align for these ‘matching’ cards as well as these two characters did.
3 - The Empress: Nefertiti Magayak
Fruitfulness, action, initiative, length of days; the unknown, clandestine; also difficulty, doubt, ignorance. Reversed: Light, truth, the unravelling of involved matters, public rejoicings; according to another reading, vacillation.
Nefertiti Magayak is an active political player that seizes the opportunities that come her way. She takes the initiative, doesn’t always have the full truth, and is a public figure with secrets of her own. It works.
4 - The Emperor: Ramulein
Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person; aid, reason, conviction; also authority and will. Reversed: Benevolence, compassion, credit; also confusion to enemies, obstruction, immaturity.
Ramulein is a calmer force within the Empire. He is definitely a ‘great person’ and has been an aid to the Trinity and the One, protecting them (within reason) with his influence. He can be kind, but he is more reasonable. Self-aware to a degree. He is the High Chancellor of the Empire and thus at the top of the political pyramid.
5 - The Hierophant: Hades
Marriage, alliance, captivity, servitude; by another account, mercy and goodness; inspiration; the man to whom the Querent has recourse. Reversed: Society, good understanding, concord, overkindness, weakness.
Hades for the Hierophant is more of a tenuous link if you fixate on 'marriage'. Really, what sells this for me is the aspect of mercy, goodness, and kindness related to this major arcana card. Hades is a kind person, who can be weak, but is a safe haven of sorts. Captivity/servitude also plays to his own state and the state of Marcus and Jessica who come to him. The religious connotation also plays well considering he is a God.
6 - The Lovers: Marcus and Jessica
Attraction, love, beauty, trials overcome. Reversed: Failure, foolish designs. Another account speaks of marriage frustrated and contrarieties of all kinds.
Speaking of Marcus and Jessica...this one was tricky, but at the same time, the clearest one for the Human pair. The reversed aspect of the Lovers matches well to them in my mind. Foolish designs! And also, on the regular side: trials overcome. Marcus and Jessica fell into problems due to their foolish designs, experienced friction between each other, but overcome them and now are joined together. Whether they are truly lovers, well, that's not for me to say here...
And that’s all for part 1!
Tarot Cards: The World (Carathoukiea) Draft
Behold! A draft of what a hypothetical Tarot deck of my world would actually look like. Starting with, well, the World: Carathoukiea! I feel like it needs more…decoration, or some border design, but I can’t think of what that would look like. I’d want it to be consistent to all cards. Besides how plain it looks, I do like how this one turned out. It is all white in the background. The font is the Yataghan Font, which is the...
Commissioned Art of Malcolm Zfnoc!
Behold, Malcolm Zfnoc! He was the reason I said Paewar Zfnoc was a ‘test’ of dark effects and Zfnoc looks. Because Malcolm Zfnoc is all that, effectively. He’s basically all black or close to it. It was definitely going to be a challenge to render into art form but, of course, Erika Hollice totally knocked it out of the park.
